Trimming a Video in Office 365 / SharePoint
Overview
This guide explains how to trim videos stored in Office 365 (OneDrive or SharePoint) using the built-in Microsoft Stream editor. Trimming allows you to remove unwanted sections from the beginning or end of a video without needing to download or re-upload it.
Where Videos Are Stored
-
OneDrive: Personal meeting recordings and uploaded videos.
-
SharePoint: Channel recordings, departmental meeting recordings, or shared content.
-
Both storage options support editing videos directly in Stream (on SharePoint), Microsoft’s integrated video platform.
Steps to Trim a Video
-
Locate the Video File
-
Go to https://portal.office.com.
-
Open OneDrive or SharePoint, depending on where the file is saved.
-
Navigate to the folder containing your video and click the file to open it.
-
-
Open in Microsoft Stream
-
When the video opens, it will play in the Stream (on SharePoint) player.
-
If prompted, click Open in Stream to access the editing tools.
-
-
Select Trim Option
-
Click the Trim video button on the toolbar.
-
A timeline will appear with adjustable handles beneath the video.
-
-
Adjust Start and End Points
-
Drag the left handle to set where the video should start.
-
Drag the right handle to set where the video should end.
-
Use Play to preview your adjustments.
-
-
Apply and Save
-
Once satisfied, click Apply.
-
The trimmed version replaces the original playback for viewers, but the untrimmed file remains accessible to the owner.
-
Tips
-
You must have edit permissions or be the video owner to trim content.
-
Trimming only changes playback; it does not permanently delete parts of the video.
-
If the Trim option does not appear, the file may still be processing or is in an unsupported format (only MP4 files can be trimmed).
Troubleshooting
| Issue | Solution |
|---|---|
| Trim option not available | Ensure the file is an MP4 and fully processed in Stream. |
| Changes won’t save | Refresh the browser and verify you have edit permissions. |
| Trimmed version not appearing | Wait a few minutes for Stream to update playback, then refresh the page. |
