Navigating the Differences Between Windows 10 and Windows 11

Overview

This article highlights the main differences users may notice when transitioning from Windows 10 to Windows 11, along with simple steps to adjust to the new interface.

1. Start Menu and Taskbar Changes

What’s Different
In Windows 11, the Start button and taskbar icons are centered by default. The Start menu has been redesigned without Live Tiles and now displays pinned apps and recommended files.

How to Move the Start Button and Icons Back to the Left

  1. Right-click on the taskbar and select Taskbar settings.

  2. Scroll down and expand Taskbar behaviors.

  3. Under Taskbar alignment, select Left from the dropdown menu.

2. Right-Click (Context) Menu

What’s Different
The right-click menu has a simplified look with icons for common actions such as Cut, Copy, Paste, Rename, and Delete.

How to Access the Classic (Windows 10-Style) Menu

  • Click Show more options at the bottom of the new right-click menu, or

  • Press Shift + F10 on your keyboard.

3. File Explorer Updates

What’s Different
The top ribbon in File Explorer has been replaced with a modern, icon-based toolbar. “Quick Access” is now labeled Home, but it still includes pinned and recent files.

Tip
You can still access all familiar file options using the toolbar or by right-clicking items for quick actions.

4. Quick Settings and Notifications

What’s Different
The Action Center from Windows 10 is now split into two separate areas.

  • Quick Settings: Click the network, sound, or battery icons on the taskbar to adjust Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, brightness, or volume.

  • Notifications & Calendar: Click the clock on the taskbar to view app notifications and the calendar.

5. Window Layout and Multitasking

What’s New
Windows 11 introduces Snap Layouts, allowing you to easily organize open windows.

How to Use Snap Layouts

  1. Hover over the maximize button on any open window.

  2. Choose a layout to position the window.

  3. Select other apps to fill the remaining spaces.

6. Widgets Panel

What’s New
The new Widgets feature provides quick access to weather, news, calendar, and more.

How to Open Widgets

  • Click the Widgets icon (a blue rectangle divided into sections) on the taskbar, or

  • Press Windows + W on your keyboard.

7. Settings Menu Redesign

What’s Different
The Settings app now features a sidebar for easier navigation and a more intuitive layout.

Tip
Use the search bar at the top of the Settings window to quickly find system options or features.

8. Visual and Interface Updates

What’s New

  • Rounded corners on all windows and menus

  • Refreshed icons and animation effects

  • Enhanced dark mode and theming options

Summary

Windows 11 builds on Windows 10 with a cleaner, more modern look and several layout improvements. While some menus and icons have moved, most features remain the same—just with updated navigation and design.

If you encounter difficulty locating a feature, use the search bar in the Start Menu or Settings to find it quickly.
